When it comes to complex and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gausium.com\/solutions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dynamic\u00a0environments<\/a> such as large shopping malls, supermarkets, and factories, this approach is highly limited.\u00a0When the site layout\u00a0changes tremendously overnight, or the environment is emptied and lack of reflective surfaces, theoretically the laser data alone cannot create effective constraints between the current trajectory and the historical map, causing the robot to get lost and bump against objects when revisiting the same scene.<\/p>\n<p>Common vision-based\u00a0SLAM systems,\u00a0on the other hand, can provide highly accurate localization. The robot carries cameras\u00a0and recognizes natural landmarks (e.g., walls, corners) or artificial landmarks (e.g., QR codes) to localize itself. On the downside, vision-based methods are more computationally intensive and expensive and can be unreliable due to illumination variation and environment changes.<\/p>\n<p>The above-mentioned localization methods are therefore unreliable for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gausium.com\/products\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">commercial floor cleaning robots<\/a> that have to run back and forth for a long time in dynamic environments, which\u00a0poses higher requirements for the robustness of the localization system.<\/p>\n<h6><strong><b>02. <\/b><\/strong><strong><b>Gausium\u2019s Solution: Marker-free Ceiling Vision Localization<\/b><\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>To provide reliable localization solution inside complex and dynamic indoor environments, Gausium\u00a0came up with the solution of ceiling vision-based localization,\u00a0which is to use an upward-looking camera mounted on the robot to extract the feature\u00a0of the ceiling for mapping and localization.\u00a0Because\u00a0in indoor environments, the ceiling plane is relatively simple and stable, free from dynamic interference such as moving people or objects.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4488\" src=\"https:\/\/gausium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image_ceiling-vision.png\" alt=\"image_ceiling-vision\" width=\"2530\" height=\"1394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gausium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image_ceiling-vision.png 2530w, https:\/\/gausium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image_ceiling-vision-300x165.png 300w, https:\/\/gausium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image_ceiling-vision-1024x564.png 1024w, https:\/\/gausium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image_ceiling-vision-768x423.png 768w, https:\/\/gausium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image_ceiling-vision-1536x846.png 1536w, https:\/\/gausium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image_ceiling-vision-2048x1128.png 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2530px) 100vw, 2530px\" \/><\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Marker-free Localization<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As opposed to conventional ceiling vision solutions in which location\u00a0markers have to be placed\u00a0on the ceiling, Gausium\u2019s ceiling\u00a0vision\u00a0localization\u00a0system does not require any specially deployed artificial landmarks such as QR codes, which saves a lot of time and effort. The feature extraction algorithm developed by Gausium enables the robot to identify the visual features of the ceilings such as\u00a0pipes, lights, squares, curves, etc. and use them as natural landmarks for localization. It also overcomes the shortcoming\u00a0of\u00a0susceptibility to illumination changes in common vision-based SLAM algorithms, and manages to achieve accurate localization in a variety of indoor environments throughout the day.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Automatic Map Update<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Users do not need to be concerned about the incompleteness of\u00a0map during the first scan. The Gausium ceiling vision-based localization system\u00a0provides automatic maintenance of\u00a0the ceiling vision map throughout the time the robot is working. When the robot\u00a0drives to the previously uncovered area, the\u00a0missing part\u00a0will be automatically covered and added to the map.\u00a0This advantage is derived from the long-term localization and mapping scheme of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gausium.com\/technology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gausium\u2019s laser-based SLAM<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Integration with the Laser-based System<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In order to improve the versatility\u00a0and adaptability of the robots, Gausium has designed a scheme to merge the ceiling\u00a0vision-based and the laser-based\u00a0localization systems. The two systems can work either independently or in conjunction. During the task of the robot, so long as the perception of a scene of a vision modality matches that of a laser modality, constraints\u00a0will be established to provide higher accuracy of localization in a complex and dynamic environment.<\/p>\n<h6><strong><b>03. <\/b><\/strong><strong><b>High Reliability, Scalability and Safety<\/b><\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>To further simplify the deployment, Gausium\u00a0has managed to make the ceiling vision localization system completely foolproof.\u00a0The system can be activated\u00a0simply\u00a0by retrofitting\u00a0a low-cost, upward-looking camera to the Gausium robot and be easily extended to larger areas, which is truly plug-and-play.<\/p>\n<p>The ceiling vision\u00a0localization system has been implemented successfully at scale in several Gausium robot\u00a0models such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gausium.com\/products\/vacuum40\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vacuum 40<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gausium.com\/products\/scrubber50\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scrubber 50<\/a>, providing robust, safe and reliable localization for thousands of applications around the world.
